Once a youngster has mastered the alphabet and start to understand the basic sounds that the letters of the alphabet make, they are classified as an emergent reader. These students are now ready to be exposed to full blown complete sentences and time to break open the picture books. I would explain to students what the quotes mean, as well as the commas.
